Summary:This baby can rapidly reduce my cut, dry logs to exactly the sort of tiny sticks I needed for wood fired pizza: the tiny kindling that's nearly impossible to produce with hand tools.
Full review:
I was so happy to find this listing - there are electric log splitters? At this price?! What's the catch?
The catch is these devices are a nightmare to ship - 120 pounds of metal (fully assembled!) really tests the limits of styrofoam and cardboard. Nobody's to blame, these things are just monsters.
It works like a dream, out of the box, with only three "steps" to full readiness: remove box, plug in splitter to any outlet, and open bleed valve. Boom. I cooked pizza the same day.
I've never used a log splitter before, but this doesn't seem slow. In ten minutes, I can reduce three logs to a pile of kindling as tall as the machine itself - split so thin I only needed newspaper and a match to start a fire. No kindling, no lighter fluid. Wow.
Some logs are easier to split than others. It's not for lack of power, it's that some logs split unevenly or break. This seems to be more common with partially decayed wood - I am discovering mold and insect damage in my less than pristine woodpile. Practice helps, and the machine isn't to blame for rotten wood.
Bad news:
-it's another made in china product, the manual is mediocre.
-Top-heavy with tiny wheels = moderate tipping hazard when moving machine.
-Probably not as fast as the professional (>$1,000) splitters.
Good news:
-Does the job.
-There's no engine to get gummed up - a HUGE advantage after struggling with small engine maintenance this spring.
-Fast enough to keep a roaring fire fed.
Not the best splitter on the planet, but just what I needed.
Quick tip:
A chair, cushion, or small step placed by the operator's end of the machine will save your knees and sciatic nerves from ergonomic meltdown.
