W1754 - SHOP FOX 20" Planer with Built In Mobile BaseSHOP FOX W1754 20-Inch Planer with Built-In Mobile Base Review
I purchased the Shop Fox W1754 20-inch planer about a month ago from Amazon and was shocked at how quick I recieved it....Wow!!! It arrived with good packageing that done it's job of protecting the planer. It was easy to clean up (I used some spray parts cleaner and lots of shop towels) and assemble and needed no additional ajustments for the type of operation I do. I believe one would have to raise the bed rollers if you were planing rough lumber. The planer worked flawlessly the first time I used it and again amazed me that it was noticeably quieter than my old 13 inch rockwell. The cutterhead left a very nice surface on the walnut I planed but I still am going to update to a Byrd Shelix head which is waiting for me to install it. I am going to update mainly because of the noise reduction and the size of the shavings it will produce. The stock cutters leave long thin shavings that don't do well with my dust collection system, either walnut of maple. Past experience tells me that SS knives nick easy and are a bother to swap out and sharpen, besides having to take them to get them sharpened about 150 miles away or send them out.I have not used the planer much but love it so far. If there are any downsides to it I would say it would be the adjustment gauge, and the "too small" power cord that is supplied. It is very inconvienent to swap out the cord because of the small openings in the electrical box. But all the other clones are the same way, including the PM I looked at.(I didn't check out the power cord issue with the others) A plus for the W1754 over the PM is the built in mobile base that works well. I tried to manuver the PM on the display floor and you had to manually jerk it around to turn it as the base has four fixed wheels they said. The Shop fox has what I call a "crazy wheel" that is easy to turn and position in tight spots, as I like machines I am not using out of the way for other operations. Please don't get me wrong, I do like PowerMatic tools but I weighed the price difference between them and I felt the price difference of almost $1500 including the Shelix indexable head came out on top. It also saved me about $450 over getting the sprial head version of the Shop Fox.
All in all I am very happy with the W1754 planer, which will soon be a W1754S. Had I planned on using it daily and working it hard, I would have went with a different machine, but I think this will serve me well for years to come.
