We installed floodstop during a major remodel. I chose the whole house model since I knew that I would be cutting holes in walls, etc. and would have the opportunity to properly install it. I put our wireless valve at the first location where the water main enters the house. This means that there are no fixtures that will NOT be shutoff if the system trips. Installation of this model required basic plumbing skills. If you do not know how to work with copper or PEX pipe, you may need to call a plumber. Keep in mind, you will also need an outlet near where you install the main control unit. The invidual sensors (4) can be run off batteries or plugged in.

Floodstop works by positioning sensor modules throughout your house that communicate with the main valve and control module. The sensors are about size of a large billfold or box of kitchen matches. However, they can be hidden under sinks, under beds, etc. The actual sensor "pad" is about the size of a silver dollar and is attached to the module via a thin wire. It can be placed anywhere near the unit. The sensor can run on batteries, or AC power. If it is plugged in, it also functions as a signal repeater and helps other modules talk to the main control. I placed my sensors behind the fridge, under the kitchen sink/dishwasher, at the water heater, and in the laundry room. You can install a couple dozen sensor modules if you want, and multiple sensor pads can be daisy chained to the same sensor module.

You might be initially a little turned off by the packaging and instructions. I thought they looked a little cheap at first, but after closer inspection, the internal electronics are first rate. I pulled one apart and examined it in detail and there is nothing wrong with the quality of this system.

What really matters is that IT WORKS. I am a bit of a control freak and I tested every sensor and every pad a dozen different ways. It doesn't take much water at all to trip the sensor. In fact, if the sensor is placed on a tile floor, they advise putting it on a folded paper towel so that any moisture that accumulates on the hardsurface flooring will not cause false alarms. I had a few false alarms until I did this. You can also adjust sensitivity via a small screw, but this has not been necessary for us.

It's actually pretty cool to see it work. Turn on the kitchen sink and put a little moisture on the sensor pad behind the fridge or at the water heater...BAM...the kitchen sink turns off...the whole house is shut down and the control module makes a loud alarm sound. Pretty cool.

I had two issues that required a call to OnSite:

1. I tested a sensor one evening around 8PM, and shut off the water. But then I couldn't get the water back on! I called OnSite in a panic (family was in town) and they called me back quickly even though it was after hours. Scott explained that occassionally, the sensor that tripped needs to be brought a little closer to the main controller to send the "reset" or "all clear" message. As I understand it, the main controller will shut off the water even if it receives a "weak" alarm signal, but won't turn it back on until it gets a strong "all clear" message. Makes sense to me. I carried the sensor over to the control module, and presto, I was able to restore water service. This is not a common problem and might have been related to how I placed the sensors and the layout of my house.

2. I had one module that seemed to misbehave and turned off the water the moment I put it in service. I called OnSite again, and again received an immediate response. I was guided through a factory reset for that module (which was actually in the instructions, I just didn't think to do it), and everything was back in business.

The point here is that customer service was top notch after both of these issues. And it didn't take long for them to get to me. A+

The modules have given us zero issues since then.

Anyway, the most important thing is that I have the peace of mind that my home is protected. Two families on our block have had floods in the last 10 years. It's more common than you think, so the price of this product seemed very reasonable. I have ordered additional sensor modules to beef up our protection.
