I Purchased this jeweler's bench for my girlfriend for the purpose of producing jewelery, a hobby of her's. I decided to purchase on-line because the local jeweler's supply company dropped the ball several times on getting one shipped to the store from their usual sources. So, I checked to see what Amazon offered in the way of jeweler's benches. I figured I would only seriously consider the most expensive one offered. In my book, I associate quality with costing more money. The description of this bench being of a solid design and made in America peaked my interest to purchase this particular one. I wasn't interested in getting the cheapest bench, I just wanted one well made at any cost. The bench arrived quickly through Fed Ex. The box was fairly heavy, but it didn't look as if there was any damage. When opened, I noticed that the top railing had come off the butcher block top and there was some additional denting of the railing and butcher block. This alerted me to at least two design flaws. One: the railing was half-assed glued on and it was fastened with razor thin nails. Two: though when assembled it appears that it has about an 1 3/8 inch thick butcher block top, with the railing missing it exposes that the butcher block thickness is greatly reduced. Only about a couple of inches inward is the butcher block top this thick. After that its reduced to about 3/8 inch thick and the rest of the thickness substituted with plywood.
So, as far as the listing promoting American made superior materials. That assertion can now be easily challenged.
Instead of going through the hassle of sending the broken bench back, I removed the cheap nails and glue, reglued it and used wood screws to properly fasten the railing. This should have done this way at the factory. Instead, it was originally no better than the crap furniture you might purchase at Walmart. I can only assume the manufacturer wanted to save time and money.
Assembly of the bench was easy and straight forward. It only takes ten screws to assemble.
To be fair, this bench does appear fairly solid when assembled (and properly fastened)though, there is some particle board used in the drawers.
If I would have seen this bench in person before purchasing it, I think I would've passed and sought out something better. What ever happened to American pride? I'll tell you. There is none. Now it all seems to be about the bottom line. No wonder Americans are buying Chinese goods. They're cheaper and no better in craftmanship than what American companies like this are producing.
