I purchased this shower base and installed it to replace an older acrylic shower stall that wasn't fiberglas reinforced and that had cracked in several places.

The build quality of this base is excellent. It looks good and feels sturdy. It has a small slope in it towards the drain so that water drains out of it naturally, but the slope is too small to notice when standing on the base.

The issues keeping this from getting 5 stars have to do with installation instructions. There are two major steps in installing this: gluing the drain into the shower base, and installing the shower base on a bed of wet mortar. I feel that installation would go much better if you don't follow the manufacturer's instructions to seal the drain to the base first. If you haven't installed the drain, it's easy to check that you have the propoer height of mortar by placing the base down in it's final location, then lifting it up and checking for wetted areas. Then you can add more mortar and repeat the check if necessary, then install the drain, and complete the installation. If you follow the manufacturer's recommendations, you have no way of checking the fit or making sure you used enough mortar in the right places.

The manufacturer also has no suggestions for the amount of mortar, although simple measurements show that it requires around a 1.5" thick layer over a flat floor. When planning this project, it would have been helpful to have a target amount of mortar to purchase. I used an entire 50-pound bag of mortar, and I should have used a little bit more -- I needed to make ridges to support the shower base in 2" bands.

Finally, American Standard has included some clips to hold the shower base to studs. I find these are useful to hold the shower in position whlie the mortar dries, but should be removed before installing the backerboard for tiling. Otherwise, they'll create a bulge under the backerboard and cause problems with tiles. The installation instructions have a clear picture with the clips installed under a backerboard and tiles, which seems like a really bad idea to me. Plus, once you have 50 or 60 pounds of mortar holding the base in place, I don't think the small clips add much retention force.

In summary, this is a well-made and attractive shower base, but the installation instructions leave much to be desired.
